The US-Israel coalition entered Day 5 of strikes against Iran with intensified operations across Tehran, missile infrastructure, and naval assets. A US submarine conducted the first torpedo sinking of an enemy warship since WWII. Iran retaliated with drone and missile strikes across the Gulf and attempted attacks on NATO airspace. Israeli forces simultaneously escalated operations against Hezbollah in Beirut and southern Lebanon. Death toll inside Iran now exceeds 1,040. Global oil prices surged 9% after effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Senate Republicans blocked a Democratic effort to limit presidential war powers. Air superiority over western Iran is expected within 48 hours.
The Israeli Air Force conducted overnight and morning strikes on multiple IRGC command centers, Basij militia sites, and ballistic missile storage facilities in and around Tehran. An Israeli F-35 Adir reportedly achieved the first air-to-air kill of an Iranian Yak-130 trainer jet over the capital. Simultaneously, IDF forces struck Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Beirut (Aramoun and Saadiyat areas), killing at least 11 and ordering mass evacuations in southern Lebanon.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed a US fast-attack submarine fired a single Mark 48 torpedo that sank the Iranian Moudge-class frigate IRIS Dena off the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Of the 180 crew, 87 were killed and 32 rescued by Sri Lankan forces. The strike marks the first use of a submarine torpedo against an enemy vessel since World War II. Hegseth stated: “Iran’s navy is evaporating by the hour.”
A Democratic-led resolution requiring congressional approval for further military action against Iran failed in the Senate. The vote signals strong Republican support for the administration’s ongoing campaign. Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine stated the US will begin “striking progressively deeper” into Iranian territory.
Iran launched ballistic missiles targeting the largest US base in the Middle East (Al Udeid, Qatar) and conducted a drone strike on an Amazon data center in Bahrain. Multiple Iranian ballistic missile barrages also targeted Israel (all intercepted). Iranian state media confirmed the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping.
